P264: Unique oak English Windsor antique chess set with exceptional patina and wood grain.
Note early form turned knights.
The set was made from the remains (possible roof beams) of the thirteenth century church at Windsor castle that underwent extensive renovations that was driven by George IV.
Starting in 1824. Kings 10.5cms tall, circa 1825.
Both kings with paper makers labels on their bases that say : 'I. PARKER, ETON TURNER to Her MAJESTY MADE from the OLD WOOD OF WINDSOR CASTLE'
The set has been part of some well know collections (including being featured in Gareth Williams book : Master Pieces). One of our new favorites.
Set came with a 19th century mother-of-pearl plaque that seems to be have been used when the set was on exhibit in France, please see below.
